We all have those days in our lives where we just can’t stop with thinking about our actions or certain events that happened in our lives. It’s as if these thoughts won’t ever go away. When you constantly think about something you tend to overcomplicate the situation. For example exaggerating the importance of certain things that happened or making some things up to fill the gaps in your memory. Basically, overthinking creates unhappiness. Most people are aware of their overthinking, but they don’t know how to solve it or how to deal with it. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to deal with overthinking. Lets take a look at the most effective ways to deal with overthinking.
1. Accept that you worry more than others
Accepting yourself for who you truly are is one of the greatest keys to your happiness, because it solves a lot of problems that you might have with your own mind and/or body. Overthinking is no exception to this. It’s not a big deal, if you feel the need to think about something multiple times after each other again. If it makes you comfortable then, really, who cares? Look at it through a positive way. You just need to have more assurance and more transparency about certain things. You think about your actions and you’re not afraid to feel responsible for certain things and that’s a trait that you have to cherish.
2. Challenge your thoughts
Not fight, but challenge them. Fighting your thoughts always leads to: avoidance of the problem or more frustration with yourself on why you can’t stop with thinking about it. So that’s why you need to challenge your thoughts. To challenge your thoughts means actively thinking about them. Ask yourself questions like: Are these thoughts harmful or useful? Am I having these thought because of some reason or am I just making things up? Are these thoughts adding value to my well-being or am I making myself unhappy? Are these thoughts necessary or are they not? Write the answers down. You’ll notice that it’s very often not as a big deal as you make it out to be. 99% of the things you worry about never even happen and the 1% that does happen doesn’t even resemble closely what you thought that would have happen.
3. Take massive action towards problem-solving
Procrastination is like the little cousin of overthinking. When you procrastinate you’re not taking action or doing something useful. You’re wasting your time doing nothing. This often leads to regret, because now you have less time to get the job done. Secondly, this procrastination leads to overthinking because you’re going to wonder about all the things you could have done if you weren’t procrastinating. That’s why you need to take massive action towards problem-solving style. If you’re struggling with procrastination then literally force yourself to take action. If you’re having difficulties with making the right decision then write down the cons and pros of every option. There is always a solution to a problem. Sometimes it just takes a little longer to find out what it is.
4. You’re in control
You’re most likely underestimating the power of your mind. It’s the one thing that we’re in control of and it’s also at the same time the most powerful one. We have to ability to control and change our thoughts. We determine what goes in and leaves our mind. For example, are you aware that when you’re overthinking, you’re not thinking about everything at once? You’re thinking about everything very fast in a row. When you become aware of this then you’ll start feeling powerful and in control. Why? Because you’ll no longer feel helpless in the sense that you aren’t able to control your thoughts since you’re aware that they’re happening one by one, it’s now easier for you to deal with the problem. These thoughts are controllable and you have the power to make a change. This is just one of the many examples of the power of your mind. So learn how to use the strength of your mind to benefit the quality of your life.
